Top National Parks Across the Globe: A Bucket List for Nature Lovers

Let’s start with a little disclaimer— “best” is entirely subjective. What makes something the best depends on personal preferences, experiences, and what speaks to you. And while the U.S. is home to some truly incredible national parks, it’s far from the only country with breathtaking protected landscapes. In fact, there are over 6,500 national parks worldwide, preserving some of the planet’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, ecosystems, and scenery. Supporting national parks feels more important now more than ever.

For this list, we’re highlighting the most popular national parks on each continent (except Antarctica), based on sheer visitor numbers. After all, if millions of people flock to these parks every year, there must be something special about them, right?

Maybe you’ve heard of some, maybe none—but let’s dive in, and who knows? You just might find a few new additions for your travel bucket list!

Africa : Kruger National Park

national park

Nestled near the Mozambique border in South Africa, Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s most legendary wildlife destinations with over 1.4 million visitors annually. This vast wilderness is home to the iconic Big Five—elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and buffalos—and Africa’s “Little Five” named after their big counterparts—elephant shrew, antlion, rhinoceros beetle, buffalo weaver, and leopard tortoise—offering a front-row seat to nature’s breathtaking spectacles. The park also boasts over 500 bird species, 147 mammal species, and 100 reptiles, along with fascinating archaeological sites and exclusive private game reserves.

With such incredible biodiversity, safari experiences here are as unique as the travelers who visit. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a family adventure, themed stays, or an exhilarating on-foot safari, Kruger has it all. You can even embark on specialized photographic or art safaris, designed to capture the beauty of the African wilderness.

When is the Best Time to Safari?

Because South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are opposite to those in the North:

  • May to September (Winter/Dry Season): This is prime wildlife-viewing time. With less dense vegetation and scarce water sources, animals gather around waterholes, making them easier to spot, but wildlife will be slower to appear due to the cooler mornings. However, winter temperatures can very cold during this time of the year so pack accordingly!
  • October to April (Summer/Wet Season): The landscape transforms into a lush, green paradise thanks to regular rains and afternoon thunderstorms. The weather is significantly hotter and more humid, but perfect for birdwatching as migratory species arrive. Plus, it’s baby season, so expect plenty of adorable wildlife sightings!

Entrance Fee

International (Non-South African) Citizens: Adult – 535 Rand (approx. $30 USD), Child – 267 Rand (approx. $15 USD)

Asia : Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park

When people think of Japan, Mount Fuji often steals the spotlight. But did you know this iconic peak is just one part of a much larger, breathtaking landscape? Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park isn’t a single location—it’s a vast collection of protected lands that include Mount Fuji, the Fuji Five Lakes, Hakone, the Izu Peninsula, and the Izu Islands. Over 100 million visitors come to explore the area every year.

This diverse wonderland boasts steaming natural hot springs, rugged mountain trails, crystal-clear lakes, dramatic Pacific coastlines, and vibrant marine life. The Izu Islands, in particular, are a paradise for scuba diving and snorkeling. And thanks to its close proximity to Tokyo, this national park is the most visited in Japan, offering a perfect escape into nature without straying too far from the city.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

  • Spring (March–May): Arguably the best time to visit! The landscape comes alive with cherry blossoms, painting the park in delicate pink hues. The mild temperatures also make it ideal for hiking and outdoor adventures.
  • Summer–Early Fall (Late June–Mid-October): If you’re planning to climb Mount Fuji, this is your window! Outside these months, harsh weather conditions make the ascent unsafe.

Entrance Fee

The park itself is free. However, some attractions or activities within the park, such as climbing Mt. Fuji or visiting specific attractions in Hakone, may have their own entry fees or costs.

Oceania : Blue Mountains National Park

Visiting Sydney, Australia and craving a breathtaking day trip into nature? Just 90 minutes from the city, Blue Mountains National Park offers a stunning escape filled with towering rock formations, charming mountain towns, and ancient Aboriginal rock art. This national park saw over 6.4 million visitors in 2022!

One of the park’s must-see wonders is the Three Sisters, an iconic rock formation that towers over the Jamison Valley, offering jaw-dropping panoramic views. The mesmerizing blue haze that blankets Australia’s Blue Mountains comes from a unique mix of eucalyptus oil, dust particles, and water vapor. These elements scatter sunlight—especially blue wavelengths—giving the landscape its signature misty, blue-tinged glow.

Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking for a scenic stroll, the park’s trails wind through lush valleys, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic cliffs, catering to all skill levels. For a truly thrilling experience, hop on the world’s steepest railway and soak in the stunning scenery from a whole new perspective. Ask us how we can book you a small group day trip from Sydney!

If you’re looking for a quieter, more comfortable experience, here are the best off-season times to visit:

  • Late Spring (October–November): Warm, dry weather makes it perfect for bushwalking and outdoor adventures.
  • Late Autumn & Winter (May–August): Crisp air and clear skies create ideal hiking conditions without the summer crowds.

$8 per vehicle per day applies only at attractions in the Glenbrook area, but there is no entry fee into the park itself.
